If you fancy a new hobby, why not learn about Lichens. You can observe them in all weathers and at all times of the year. You can find them on the paving slabs outside your front door, the cliffs around our coast, grave stones, trees and on roofs (although climbing onto roofs to identify a lichen is not something I would recommend doing)


OPAL (The Open Air Laboratory Network) needs volunteers to look at Lichens for its new Air Survey, which aims to find out more about the impact of air quality on the environment.

Listen out for Red Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) as February is the height of the mating
season. The spine chilling calls pierce the quiet of the night. You are more likely
to hear the foxes calling in urban areas, rather than the countryside. The cubs
are born approximately 7 -
February is a good month to look and identify native trees. With all their leaves

Venus and Jupiter can be seen very low in the West skies on 16th February at 5.45pm. They are the brightest planets and can be seen just before twilight and will be below the crescent moon.
