Learn all about Lichens....

If you fancy a new hobby, why not learn about Lichens.  You can observe them in all weathers and at all times of the year.  You can find them on the paving slabs outside your front door,  the cliffs around our coast, grave stones, trees and on roofs (although climbing onto roofs to identify a lichen is not something I would recommend doing)

OPAL (The Open Air Laboratory Network) needs volunteers to look at Lichens for its new Air Survey, which aims to find out more about the impact of air quality on the environment.

To take part go to the OPAL web-site >>

Natural History

Listen out for Red Foxes (Vulpes vulpes) as February is the height of the mating season.  The spine chilling calls pierce the quiet of the night.  You are more likely to hear the foxes calling in urban areas, rather than the countryside.  The cubs are born approximately 7 - 8 weeks later and are born in a sheltered earth between tree roots - or even under a garden shed.

February is a good month to look and identify native trees.  With all their leaves gone, their characteristic silhouettes make identification easy.  To help you identify tree species found in the British Isles, go to www.british-trees.com.

National Nest Box week starts on February  15th.  Encourage the birds to nest in your garden by either making or purchasing a nest box and erect in your own garden.  National Nest Box Week is organised by the British Trust for Ornithology.  For more information, go to their website. > >

Why not take part in the 46th Veolia Environment Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition 2010.  Closing date is 5th March 2010, so if you have stunning wildlife photographs, then go to the website and find out everything you need to know about entering.  www.nhm.ac.uk/wildphoto.

Venus and Jupiter can be seen very low in the West skies on 16th February at 5.45pm.  They are the brightest planets and can be seen just before twilight and will be below the crescent moon.
